I decided not to save the world and to just do what I can

I was listening to a podcast with Bob Goff and he shared something that resonated richly.

Bob has been active serving in Uganda amongst other places and I’ve been active serving in Zimbabwe amongst other places.  I saw many parallels and things I would pattern from his organizations.

On the pod, Bob shared, “We’ve tried to just do what we can in Uganda… I had a website that said, ‘Changing a generation of Ugandans’… I had to get real with that and say, ‘I have 300 kids,’ and probably 100 of them don’t want to be there.  I’m not changing a generation; I’m just doing what I can.”

I’ve always had dreams of saving the world.

I’ve wanted to make a difference everywhere I’ve been whether in college, in Africa, in India, in the NBA or any of the opportunities I’ve had in life.

And the thing is, I can make a difference, but I don’t have to change the world.

I can simply do what I can wherever I am.

I can love my neighbor.

I can love my co-workers.

And I can love the barista at the coffee shop, the homeless man as I drive into work, and the random strangers I come across each day.

That’s enough.  No agenda.  No gimmicks.  My responsibility isn’t to save the world but to just do what I can wherever I am.
