For Lent, I gave up time

For Lent, I gave up time

Lent is a period of 40 days before Easter, a season of reflection and preparation before Easter celebrations.  It’s a replication of Christ’s sacrifice and withdrawal into the desert for 40 days.

Many followers of Jesus give up something meaningful to them during lent whether it be certain foods, activities, or social media and TV.

This year, as I processed what I would give up, I thought of all the usual things and then something hit me and it stuck… time.  I would give up time.

I rarely sit in silence.  I rarely mediate.  When I pray, I’m usually in my car.  When I read my Bible, I’m usually in a coffee shop.

For Lent, I decided to simply set aside 10 minutes each day and sit in silence.

“The Christian life is a series of new births… God is birthing new things in us all along the way if we are making space for that.  If you will make space in your life for the births God is doing, it will change not just you, but everyone around you.  That’s why it’s so important to make space.  There’s so much coming at us… It’s very hard to stop and be still and to make space for the new births of God.” – Pete Scazzero
