Refugees: Letter to the Church

Refugees: Letter to the Church

“We’ve been talking about refugees at our church and are trying to decide what the appropriate response is.”

Although I appreciate church communities wrestling through issues of modern times, this is one that the church need not wrestle with.

The answer to ‘refugees’ by the church is, yes.  Welcome them.  Always.

The government should absolutely wrestle with what to do, that is the government’s role (I am not stating that I agree or disagree with their decisions).  Regardless of my stance, I do understand the necessity of a government to do what a government must do.

As for the church, there’s no response other than to welcome refugees, care for them, and love them.

If your faith is about Jesus, your response will be that of the Good Samaritan.  If your faith is about nationality and religion, your response will be that of the Priest and Levite (Luke 10).

This really makes it easier for the Christian.  You can save the time you’d spend wrestling with the issue, and instead, go find someone you can welcome with love.

Church, we have nothing to fear.  We simply have opportunities to love.
