2025 Unexpected Recap

2025 Unexpected Recap

2025 was possibly the most unexpected year of my life.

I started the year off living in Nashville. Peaking around at the possibility of staying long-term if I were to meet a girl or land a good job. Strike 1. Strike 2. But I got to babysit and be an uncle so… home run.

I decided to move back to Portland.  And then I got a call that took the unexpected to another level and not to be dramatic, but I’ll be dramatic, changed the course of my life.

Which is good. Life was a little rudderless at the time and needed a course, any course really. But like a good course.

I moved to Canada to coach Basketball. I felt in over my head but also thrilled for the opportunity. And… I loved it. I loved coaching. I loved Canada. I loved everything about it.  Once I came alive, like, how I used to come alive when the sun finally came out in Portland, I realized, wow, I don’t think I’ve been alive for like a decade, seriously.

I drove back to Portland after the season wondering what would be next.

I rode the high for awhile. I knew it would change but I was hoping it wouldn’t get quite as dark and dreary as the weather in Portland and yet it did and worse… my house had severe water damage and I had to have the kitchen and living room ripped out for 4 months. I was waiting on my next work opportunity. Broken relationships ensued. And then 5, ugh, 5 dental visits and operations followed.  The rains came down.

And then… another opportunity came along to move back to Canada, a dream job of sorts, one that I’m loving already. And then I went to Nashville to spend lots of time with my family, in particular my adorable niece and nephew. And I found myself on a flight, a second one because the first was canceled, back to Portland, recapping the most unexpected year of my life.
