In Bird by Bird, Anne Lamott shares, “E.L. Doctorow said once said that 'Writing a novel is like driving a car at night. You can see only as far as your headlights, but you can make the whole trip that way. You don't have to see where you're going, you don't have to see your destination or everything you will pass along the way.”

It’s true of writing.

It’s true of life.

We don’t get to see the end.

And if we think we know how it ends or where it will lead, we’re rarely right.

We see as far as our headlights.

 The roads twist and turn.

They take us ways we did not anticipate.

We may even go off-road a bit.

But in the end, it’s not a matter of getting to where you thought you’d end up.

Or even staying on the road.

It’s a matter of enjoying and embracing the ride.

Step by step.  Bird by bird.  Turn by turn.
