gospel of the great divide

I continually hear the words, “our country has never been more divided.”

I’m guessing the Patriots and the Loyalists of the 1700’s would have a different opinion.

I’m guessing the Confederates and the Union of the 1800’s would have a different opinion. 

I’m guessing those facing segregation in the 1900’s would also have a different opinion.   

The difference isn’t the divide.  The difference is our awareness of the divide.

We aren’t just hearing one side’s stories.  We are hearing everyone’s stories. 

Throughout history, certain individuals, have had the opportunity to shape media whether it be through newspapers, television, or entertainment.

That’s no longer true.  Now, we all influence media.  The content is ours to write.  The content is ours to debate and critique.

A position in the ‘professional’ media may give one a certain amount of authority.  But today, we all have the same opportunity with a pen and paper or a computer and mouse to exude just as much or more power and influence.

We can no longer simply refer to and criticize what is perceived as a biased media.  We all are the media now.  And we have the opportunity to share our stories.
