gospel of desire
Desire is a strong word.
It causes us to make brash decisions, for better or worse.
We will climb a mountain, move across the country, get married... in the name of desire.
Desire is a beautiful word.
It gives us the passion to achieve, to move forward in joy, to give up anything for the sake of something else.
Desire is a dangerous word.
We will cheat on a lover, sacrifice our family for achievement, ransom our reputation for money... all in the name of desire.
As Tim Keller says, "Often what seem to be our deepest desires are really just our loudest desires."
What is important when listening to the desires that move and rage within us is not listening so much to the ones that are the loudest, but listening to the ones that are indeed the deepest.
It's not just the lover you want. It's connection. It's not just the job you want. It's self-worth and identity. … it’s being known. Being heard. Being loved.
Our desires move us. Move us to act and behave in a certain manner. We must listen. Listen. Listen. Listen to what lies deep within us, and let it speak.
